By Brian Shawn, North Dakota ‘02
Originally printed in the Spring, 2011 SigEp Journal

Jeremy Howard, Trine ’11, doesn’t have any regrets as he wraps up his college career. The two-sport athlete has succeeded at just about everything he’s set his mind to.

On the gridiron, Howard will go down as one of the most successful special teams players in Trine history. He is third all-time on the school’s scoring list and set a record for most consecutive extra points in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletics Association. Howard was also part of a Thunder program than won back-to-back conference titles. The kicker doesn’t always get a lot of praise, but Howard says he’s earned a lot of respect from his teammates. “I think that the guys in my Fraternity and on my football team see what a strong work ethic I have and the passion I have for my goals and others.” Howard said. “There are the occasional jokes from time to time about how lazy my position is, but someone has got to do it.” Howard also played baseball for Trine and was voted Rookie of the Year by his team in 2007.

Although Howard has received a number of accolades for this hard work on the field, he receives more recognition for what he does off of it. He is graduating with the school’s highest cumulative grade-point at 3.9 and was named an ESPN Academic All-American. He was named a 2010 Zollinger Senior. Howard will receive his bachelor’s degree in elementary education and hopes to teach and coach in Indiana.

Howard has also been an active member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. He’s a former chapter president, vice president of recruitment, and IFC representative of the Indiana Theta Chapter and has been involved with a number of community service programs. “There is absolutely nothing I can say about SigEp that will do it any justice for what it has rally meant for me as an athlete, a scholar, and a human being,’ Howard said. “I have gotten the chance to grow mentally, physically, and spiritually thanks in large part to Sigma Phil Epsilon.”

Maybe the most important accomplishment of all is that Howard will be the first member of his family to graduate from college. “I know that I have been blessed with the best family support system in this world, especially my mother Cindy, who has raised be by herself due to the unfortunate loss of my father in 1995.” Howard said. “I know that my family is proud of me and knowing that makes me extremely humble and forever grateful.”

October 8, 2011

Dear Brothers,

The Lambda House Board of Directors would like to extend our gratitude to the alumni, actives, their friends and family for making Homecoming Weekend another event that makes us all proud to be SigEps. It took everyone working together to make it a success.

A total of $27,715 was raised over the weekend. Such a large sum of money is evidence of the alumni’s confidence in the brotherhood to help continue the tradition of excellence. The money donated will be used help pay the down the new house loan and to develop a newsletter campaign. We are also working to create a scholarship program for new members in need.

We congratulate the actives for making the decision to pursue another Buchanan Cup in 2013. For many alumni the Buchanan Cup award was one of their most memorable achievements while an active. Indiana Theta can lay claim to being one of the best Sigma Phi Epsilon chapters in the county by wining 7 Buc Cups. Under your leadership, and support from Lambda House let’s make it 8!

We are planning another alumni event with the chapter in the spring of ‘12. We hope this can be combined with a Sweetheart Ball. Still another event in the early planning stages is a chapter officer’s retreat together with alumni.

Lambda House meetings occur monthly during the year via Sykpe and are open to all alumni and undergraduates. Please contact me or John Milliken for the date and time of the meetings. Your participation is welcomed.

Our success in the next year will in large part be based on how well we stay in tune to each other’s needs, work together as a team, and follow thru on our plans.

Fraternally Yours,

John Patota

All the engraved bricks purchased during the year will be installed during a ceremony each year on Homecoming Weekend. Bill Stockberger presided over last year's ceremony as Honorary Brick Layer.
Jim & Joyce Thompson served as hosts for the 2011 Alpha Gamma Upsilon Reunion in Punta Gorda, Florida on February 25th. It is always nice to visit with Fraternity Brothers to share lots of laughs and some colorful stories.

Joyce did a fantastic job of food preparation; the food was very delicious. A big Thank You goes out to Jim and Joyce for being excellent Hosts and for all that they had did to put together this Reunion.

As many brothers know, Alpha Gamma Upsilon was the national fraternity that preceded Sigma Phi Epsilon as owners and caretakers of the original house on Darling Street from 1949 to 1968. In fact it was the Alpha Gamma Upsilons that purchased the house at 406 West Gale St. as an annex to the main house to provide additional housing for the growing brotherhood.

The monument to Alpha Gamma Upsilon still stands on the corner of the new house.

Steven R. Myers, a 1981 graduate and Sig Ep, earned this year's Trine’s Outstanding Achievement Award. Myers has been actively involved in the recruitment of graduates to Parker Hannifin and continues to support Trine’s cast metals and mechanical engineering programs.

The Outstanding Achievement Award is given to an alumni each year who has attained a high level of achievement in his or her profession, is well thought of in his or her community, and who upholds the ideals of Trine University.

The award came as a complete surprise to Steve. His wife and family, who where in on the secret, made up a story so that he would attend the diner ceremony at this year's Homecoming Weekend, October 9th.

Hello, Brothers and Friends,

If you have not been back to Angola recently you will be surprised at how much things have changed. The old book store is gone, but all the other buildings on the main campus are still there. Most of them have been remolded on the inside and restored on the outside.

A new Welcome Center has been built across from Best Hall and the new University Center is located on the other side of the railroad tracks. The University Center is the location of the bookstore, a theater, dining area, the student radio station and a rock climbing wall.

Stewart Hall, Cameron, Alwood, and Platt have all been replaced with new, modern dorms scattered across campus. The Fred Zollner Athletic (football) Stadium is located where the old dorms once where. Across from the football stadium is Jannen Baseball Field, and an large indoor multi purpose sports facility.

The Famous Fish Of Stroh restaurant outside of town is exactly the same as you remember it. Skip’s has changed some but not much but Mike’s sub shop is gone, so is Penguin Point. Around the monument in downtown Angola looks the same as it ever did.

As you know, the Old House, and both Annexes have been replaced with a great new house with all the modern features brothers need as they become the leaders of the 21st century. Today’s students want to pledge a fraternity house with wide screen TVs, leather couches and high speed Internet in every room.

The new house is in great shape. The Chapter Room has all our Buchanan Cups, scrap books, trophies, years books and other items. A lot of the Actives when out of there way to meet us Alumni. That was very nice.

Lambda House meeting on Saturday morning was well attended with a mix of recent and old alumni. The Executive Board gave their annual report, we heard from our Chapter Advisor, and elected four new members to the E Board. Everyone came away from our meeting with appreciation for the work our Alumni leadership has done and the realization that more can be done to keep our chapter strong.

The Actives had a tail gate party before the Saturday’s football game, so did the Alumni. The football game was great to nice to watch. The Trine Thunder beat LaGrange, Georgia 51-7 to improve their record to 5-0. Many of the Actives are on the football team so the win was extra special.

Look for a Homecoming Committee to be formed during the next few months. The goal will be to make next year even bigger and better.
