The 406 bit the dust last week, being the final house on Indiana Theta's property to meet the wrecking ball.

The house at 406 West Gale Street was originally purchased by Alpha Gamma Upsilon in 1967 to meet the demands of rapidly growing membership. That same year, Alpha Gamma Upsilon became a Sigma Phi Epsilon Colony eventually being chartered in 1968.

The 406 had a great part in the history of our fraternity and many of our members have great memories living in or hanging out at the 406.

The Indiana Theta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon is moving into the 21st century at an accelerated rate.

Trine University has placed a tremendous emphasis on modern living accommodations with the construction of new dorms equipped with the latest in technology and all the creature comforts of home to meet the demands from the students of today. Our fraternity needs to meet this challenge head-on and proactively move forward with the construction of a new house to ensure the values and traditions of the Indiana Theta chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon are engraved in the book of time forever. The grains of sand have slipped through the hour glass. The time has now come to invert the hour glass and start anew.

The Campaign

The dream of a new house will soon become a reality at 115 South Darling Street. Ground was broken on June 12th, 2008 with the demolition of the old house. The scheduled completion date of the new house is set for January 2009. Click here to see progress pictures and more details of this monumental event.

We are very excited about this opportunity, however, a lot more work needs to be done and we need your help to succeed. The construction project is ambitious - we need to raise $1.3 million dollars. The new house will provide first class accommodations in line with the University while providing the actives with an opportunity to be a part of the best fraternity on campus. Denise Stump, the wife of Brother Jim Stump, summed-up the meaning of what the Sigma Phi Epsilon house did for her and her husband when she said “For many of us this is where our life really began.” Many of the life lessons we use daily started in the House with the Red Door.

Our campaign is really quite simple: we have approximately 600 alumni and for various reasons we estimate approximately 400 alumni will be able to make a contribution to the campaign. Please consider what Sigma Phi Epsilon did for you and help make this dream a reality for generations to come. While all donations will be accepted we are seeking a minimum pledged amount of $3,250 per person payable over a five (5) year pledge period. This breaks down to only $1.78 per day. Your commitment to help
your fraternity will forever change the face of the Indiana Theta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon. All donations are tax deductible per IRS guidelines under the fraternity 501C(3) tax fi ling status. All contributions received after our goal has been met will go into an endowment for maintenance of the house and grounds.

Update from Ken Schneider:

Things are moving along really well. The flooring (carpet & tile) will be
finished by the end of this week. The cabinets are being delivered next
week and will be installed by the end of next week. The electrician is
planning to have all of the lighting fixtures installed by the end of next
week as well. The builder said things are moving along right on schedule.
They will be asking for the occupancy permit the week of December 15th!

All of the actives are very excited about moving into the house. They
selected their rooms at the house meeting earlier this week. They will
begin to move their things into their rooms the week of 12/15. The actives
are also fully entrenched in the new Balanced Man program - so long to the
old pledge program and the days of hazing.

The new Sigma Phi Epsilon on the Tri-State campus of Trine University will
certainly look very different in 2009 but the foundation and principals of
the fraternity will remain unchanged.

HFF,

The fire, which Angola Fire Department officials determined started on the second floor of the house, was classified to be accidental.

The fire, which started on the second floor was contained to a small section of the first and second floors of the house, said T.R. Hagerty, Angola Fire Department public information officer.

The fire was brought under control less than 15 minutes after firefighters arrived at the scene.

There were no injuries in the incident.

The estimated damage was approximately $5,000, Hagerty said.

Assisting Angola firefighters were the Steuben Township Fire Department, Steuben County Emergency Medical Service, the Steuben County Sheriff's Department, the Angola City Police and Northern Indiana Public Service Co. The Fremont Fire Department was also called in, but the dispatch was disregarded en route to the fire.
Thanks to everyone who made this year's SigEp homecoming a great success.

It started of right with the Trine football team handed #14 ranked Franklin College a defeat that afternoon in a great football game. With Trine behind in the 4th quarter, they battled back for a 30-27 win.

Afterwards, a good group of alumni were back for festivities at the SigEp house, highlighted by a great buffet of food pulled together by Dayne Haight. Two huge moon-bounce inflatable type things were there for the kids - and adults - as we had the street shut down in front of the 406. All alumni in attendance got a first-hand view of the new house and house nicely it's coming together. It's a facility that we will all be proud of when it's completed.

There is so much more, but for now, here are some photos from Saturday afternoon at the house. Please share your photos! Just leave a comment in this post with a link to any photos you have posted online.

Brothers, we're at a milestone this coming weekend and many alumni from all over are coming back to celebrate. Our construction phase is just about at the half way point and we welcome all of you to come see andwalk through the halls of the New SigEp on campus.

Built to last another 100 years, this house has been carefully designed to accommodate our ever-growing pledge classes each semester.

This weekend you can expect to see progress in our construction and enjoy a Saturday filled with activities for those that bring their kids and for those that didn't. We have a buffet that will challenge some of our biggest eaters and many alumni that you'll spend hours catching up with.

Join us this weekend and celebrate the hard work that various alumni and actives have put together for you. Weather is looking perfect!

An inspiring in note from one of our alumni, Teo Bal ...

To all my family, friends and colleagues,

Sometimes we live through an event that triggers one to look back and reminisce about the past and some of the experiences gained in the journey to get where you are now. Well, such an event is now about to happen in my life, and I wanted to share it with all of you who had a part to play in it.

On September 19, here in St. Louis, I will be sworn in as a US Citizen. The reason I copied you on this e-mail it is because of your direct or indirect influence, on a professional and/or personal level, that I chose to become a citizen, and to be proud to be called an American in the near future. Whether it was through your friendship, your guidance, your example of showing me what America and Americans are about, or simply by giving me the feeling of being home and looked at as equal despite my looks or heritage, it all was valuable to me in ways that words cannot describe. I am very happy that you were part of this 19 year journey, which started all the way in 1989 when I came over as a wide-eyed and green high school exchange student, and ends with me holding my US Citizenship Certificate in a couple weeks from now.

For all of this, I am very, very thankful to you, and the only way I can think to show you my gratitude is to invite you to the ceremony in St. Louis on that Friday. It probably is one of the most patriotic events that one can attend, and very emotional on top of that. For those of you that get a kick out of it, it clearly is one of the few times you will see grown men cry. It's in the morning, and for some of you both the travel and the time may be prohibitive (most of you work for a living after all), but regardless, if you're copied you're invited. Let me know if you want to come, and I will let you know more details.

Finally, and this is near and dear to my heart now, go vote in November. I don't care who for. As someone who was voiceless and voteless for all of his life, you cannot even begin to imagine how important that right really is. Make use of it. I know I will make use of it very emotionally for the first time in my life, and I hope you will follow my enthusiasm.

Again, I thank you very dearly for having been an influence in my life's path. For some of you, this e-mail may come as a surprise, but believe me when I say that you did play a part in me calling myself Proud to be an American.

P.S.: Please feel free to share this with anyone you like.

Regards,

Teo Bal

Posted on behalf of Lambda House Treasurer Ken Schneider...

August 26, 2008:

The house has been completely framed and roofed. Most of the windows have
been installed as well. The electricians and plumbers will be finished in
the next couple of days and the HVAC systems will begin installation next
week. We met with the A/V company today to finalize layout of cable,
internet, TV and data lines. Drywall should begin in about another three
weeks.

Comments from people who have seen and toured the house have been very
positive. The house is big and will have an impressive front when viewed
from campus. The bedrooms feel adequate for their purpose and the
entertainment room on the first floor will be awesome. The basement has
been the biggest surprise - it looks enormous! No more ducking your head in
the mosh-pit with those 9ft ceilings!

Overall everything is coming along smoothly. The new red front door should
be installed later this week.
