Trine Kicker Gets The Full College Experience

By Brian Shawn, North Dakota ‘02
Originally printed in the Spring, 2011 SigEp Journal

Jeremy Howard, Trine ’11, doesn’t have any regrets as he wraps up his college career. The two-sport athlete has succeeded at just about everything he’s set his mind to.

On the gridiron, Howard will go down as one of the most successful special teams players in Trine history. He is third all-time on the school’s scoring list and set a record for most consecutive extra points in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletics Association. Howard was also part of a Thunder program than won back-to-back conference titles. The kicker doesn’t always get a lot of praise, but Howard says he’s earned a lot of respect from his teammates. “I think that the guys in my Fraternity and on my football team see what a strong work ethic I have and the passion I have for my goals and others.” Howard said. “There are the occasional jokes from time to time about how lazy my position is, but someone has got to do it.” Howard also played baseball for Trine and was voted Rookie of the Year by his team in 2007.

JeremyHoward1.JPGAlthough Howard has received a number of accolades for this hard work on the field, he receives more recognition for what he does off of it. He is graduating with the school’s highest cumulative grade-point at 3.9 and was named an ESPN Academic All-American. He was named a 2010 Zollinger Senior. Howard will receive his bachelor’s degree in elementary education and hopes to teach and coach in Indiana.

Howard has also been an active member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. He’s a former chapter president, vice president of recruitment, and IFC representative of the Indiana Theta Chapter and has been involved with a number of community service programs. “There is absolutely nothing I can say about SigEp that will do it any justice for what it has rally meant for me as an athlete, a scholar, and a human being,’ Howard said. “I have gotten the chance to grow mentally, physically, and spiritually thanks in large part to Sigma Phil Epsilon.”

Maybe the most important accomplishment of all is that Howard will be the first member of his family to graduate from college. “I know that I have been blessed with the best family support system in this world, especially my mother Cindy, who has raised be by herself due to the unfortunate loss of my father in 1995.” Howard said. “I know that my family is proud of me and knowing that makes me extremely humble and forever grateful.”

Letter To Brothers - October, 2011

October 8, 2011

Dear Brothers,

The Lambda House Board of Directors would like to extend our gratitude to the alumni, actives, their friends and family for making Homecoming Weekend another event that makes us all proud to be SigEps. It took everyone working together to make it a success.

A total of $27,715 was raised over the weekend. Such a large sum of money is evidence of the alumni’s confidence in the brotherhood to help continue the tradition of excellence. The money donated will be used help pay the down the new house loan and to develop a newsletter campaign. We are also working to create a scholarship program for new members in need.

We congratulate the actives for making the decision to pursue another Buchanan Cup in 2013. For many alumni the Buchanan Cup award was one of their most memorable achievements while an active. Indiana Theta can lay claim to being one of the best Sigma Phi Epsilon chapters in the county by wining 7 Buc Cups. Under your leadership, and support from Lambda House let’s make it 8!

We are planning another alumni event with the chapter in the spring of ‘12. We hope this can be combined with a Sweetheart Ball. Still another event in the early planning stages is a chapter officer’s retreat together with alumni.

Lambda House meetings occur monthly during the year via Sykpe and are open to all alumni and undergraduates. Please contact me or John Milliken for the date and time of the meetings. Your participation is welcomed.

Our success in the next year will in large part be based on how well we stay in tune to each other’s needs, work together as a team, and follow thru on our plans.

Fraternally Yours,

John Patota

Alpha Gamma Upsilon Reunion

The Lineup.jpg

L to R: Vern Tidwell, Bob Stroope, Jim "Fig" Newton, Jim Thompson, Howard Gilliam, and David Johnston

Jim & Joyce Thompson served as hosts for the 2011 Alpha Gamma Upsilon Reunion in Punta Gorda, Florida on February 25th. It is always nice to visit with Fraternity Brothers to share lots of laughs and some colorful stories.

Joyce did a fantastic job of food preparation; the food was very delicious. A big Thank You goes out to Jim and Joyce for being excellent Hosts and for all that they had did to put together this Reunion.

As many brothers know, Alpha Gamma Upsilon was the national fraternity that preceded Sigma Phi Epsilon as owners and caretakers of the original house on Darling Street from 1949 to 1968. In fact it was the Alpha Gamma Upsilons that purchased the house at 406 West Gale St. as an annex to the main house to provide additional housing for the growing brotherhood.

The monument to Alpha Gamma Upsilon still stands on the corner of the new house.
